Burriana

The above picture was taken by me of the beach at Burriana from the path that leads to Nerja town.

The location of the house is shown on the Maps page, but  it is close to the end of a cul de sac and is directly behind Burriana beach.  It is a five minute walk down to the beach, although as the house is located up a hill, it is a ten minute walk back.

Burianana beach has a supermarket, the usual tourist shops, but more surprisingly it has a number of quite good restuarants, including the beach restuarant Ayos. Here the Paella is cooked by a chap (usually Ayo himself) wearing cardboard leg protectors held on with string to shield himslef from the heat of the flames from the wooden packing cases they burn to cook these enormous dishes of Paella.  The price is around 6 Euros for a dish, refills are free and the food is great !

It is rumoured that Ayo himself was given the ground for the restuarant by the local goverment after he and a few friends first discovered the famous Nerja caves, c. 1959.  See :  http://www.ocregister.com/articles/nerja-one-town-1802664-paella-ayo

Burriana beach itself has umbrellas and sun beds to rent, although there are a number of beds at the house, including a couple of light weight ones you can easily carry to the beach.  Various water sports are available, including scuba diving and day cruises along the coast. The availability varies with the season.

Burriana Beach was awarded the Blue Flag award in 2006 and in addition to this, it is one of only 2 beaches in the whole of Andalucia to have won a 'Q-Standard Quality Award' for its quality and cleanliness.  The beach itself is a wide beach composed of a mixture of fine sand and pebbles, making it easy to walk on.

Nerja

The town of Nerja is around a 20 minute minute stroll from the house.  Nerja is one of the few places that caters for tourists, but has not surrendered its soul and built horrendous lines of skyscrapers next to the beach.

In fact Nerja is much the same low rise town with narrow streets that it was decades ago, and that is due to the local council, who have steadfastly prevented over development, (although there is still a lot of development outside the town itself).

Within Nerja town there another four beaches, all very nice, usually accessed by a flight of steps from the town to the beach.  Be aware that it is only at the far side of Nerja, (west) where the town and the beach are more or less on the same level, where you can walk onto the beach  (and off again) with little effort.

If you look at the views from the Balcon de Europe, which is located in the middle of town, you can see that it sits many meters above sea level, hence the great views at sunset !
